Countdown to Cashless

Onroute Truckstops is counting down to becoming cashless; from April 2023 we will only accept card or contactless payments at our truckstops.

Why are we doing this? Quite simply because the world is changing. Far fewer people carry cash these days and paying by card is increasingly becoming the norm in the UK and beyond - and it's quicker and easier for all concerned.

Ulceby Truckstop leads the way

Ulceby Truckstop has been cashless since lockdown in 2020. Then, many businesses, especially restaurants and cafes, were requesting customers pay by card to reduce infection and it's widely acknowledged that this accelerated the trend towards paying by card rather than cash.

“The transition to card and contactless was actually pretty straightforward,” commented Nicola Rose, one of the managers at Ulceby Truckstop. “Once drivers knew that we were no longer accepting cash they quickly adjusted. Card and contactless payments help speed up customer service at the till and make cashing up at the end of the day much easier. Honestly, we haven’t looked back since.”

A growing trend...

This trend towards card and contactless payment is set to continue. Many popular restaurant and cafe chains have turned their backs on cash and while some still accept cash, they strongly encourage payment by card or contactless. The main reasons cited for the transition are that it speeds up customer service and helps reduce costs. Some businesses have also said that not having cash on the premises makes it safer for their staff.

...and a logical next step

Head of Onroute Truckstops, Jay Nair, said, "We are constantly looking at ways of improving our business systems and processes, and this includes evaluating and adopting more advanced, streamlined technology where appropriate. Having successfully trialled cashless transactions at Ulceby we see the introduction of card-only payments as a logical next step for Onroute Truckstops. We believe that by giving our customers plenty of notice, the transition to card and contactless payments will be straightforward and cause minimum inconvenience to our customers."
